I'm pretty much sure as of today that I'm going to be double-majoring in English and Scandanavian Languages, possibly with a minor in Film if I can do that and still get priority transfer consideration.

I was hoping for awhile there that some magical, awesome major would appear out of nowhere (like if UCLA's sociology department suddenly started offering a major about physical deformities and circus culture, or their history department decided that you can do a history major with a concentration in the history of lowbrow popular entertainment, or the Kinsey Institute suddenly announced that they were building a satellite school in Southern California and it will be done by next year and NOBODY is enrolled yet so sign up y'all) but nobody is smart enough to do any of that stuff for me, so it looks like I'm gonna have to just settle.

Scandanavia is where all the porn comes from and it also contains the only nation in the universe that celebrates Waffle Day, so I guess I could do worse.

Unfortunately, I'm not actually from Norway; much of my DNA was merely manufactured there and then shipped off to be assembled in Illinois.

you can always make your own major, too. you have to get approval from the dean of whatever department your major falls under, but youd be able to do independent study courses and write your thesis on whatever you want. and remember you can always write your thesis on whatever you want. i know someone who wrote their thesis on lowbrow culture [i think it was about comic books] for their BA in literature.

the school im transferring to has a decent history department but no film department, but my major is still going to be film history [im most interested in the historical context and sociological impact of film, wank wank history i know] with either a minor or a heavy focus in feminist studies. im just going to have to do more work by myself and with the dean. dont settle. you can do pretty much whatever you want in college, you just might have to deal with a little more bureaucracy than usual.

I thought about creating my own major, but all the red tape scares the shit out of me. plus if I major in a foreign language that probably means they'll send me overseas for a year, which considering how poor I am is probably the only way I'm ever going to get out of the fucking country.

youll still have to pay for the semester abroad, and you dont need to be majoring in a language to do a semester abroad. you should definitely do it if you can though. my cousin lived in brazil for 7 months a couple years ago and totally got a marriage proposal from the 60 year old man who she was renting a room from, you'll come back with a ton of good stories like that.

the red tape isnt that bad for making your own major, if thats your only reason for not doing it you should look into it first. the hardest part with rolling your own major will be the self discipline involved in working on projects alone outside of traditional class settings, thats the reason im worried about mine. besides if youre worried about bureaucratic hurdles you need to steel yourself up, youre going to a UC, its all ridiculous bureaucracy from here on out

I haven't totally ruled it out, I was actually considering doing a specialized history major like what you're talking about for awhile but I haven't talked to anyone at the college about it. I'm supposed to e-mail a guy at the office for the program that benefits poor and/or stupid people this week anyway, so maybe I'll ask about that too.
